Legend has it that a Lama while following a stray Yak stumbled into the Langtang Valley; hence the name Langtang (Lang-Yak, Tang-Follow). The region of Langtang - Helambu is situated to the North of Kathmandu and is easily accessible. This region features snow-covered peaks, a mild climate, and friendly hospitable inhabitants making it the ideal trekking destination the year round. The 1,710 sq km Langtang National Park hosts a variety of natural spectacles, from green valleys alive with Langur & Red Pandas to the towering oak and rhododendron forests bursting natural color. The peaks of Langtang Lirung (7,246m), Gang Chhenpo (6,388m) and Dorje Lakhpa (6,975m) surround the beautiful Langtang valley. Helambu, a mid-elevation region to the Park's south, is a study center of Tibetan Buddhism. The Lamas (a Tibetan tribe) and the Tamang people maintain a rich cultural heritage, evident in ornately carved wooden windows, lively dance festivals, and skilled weaving traditions. Trekkers can enjoy these sights using any one of three main trekking routes of Langtang.
